About the CCMA exam
Who can take the CCMA exam?
You need a high school diploma or equivalent, or to be scheduled to earn one within 18 months, plus either a medical assistant training program completed within the past five years or supervised work experience as a medical assistant (one year within the past three years, or two years within the past five). Check the NHA Candidate Handbook for the full rules, including California's.
How is the exam structured?
The CCMA exam has 180 multiple-choice questions: 150 scored and 30 unscored pretest questions, with a 3-hour limit. The scored items cover seven domains, and Clinical Patient Care makes up 84 of the 150. Our 100-question practice exams keep the same proportions.
What score do I need to pass?
NHA reports a scaled score from 200 to 500, and you need 390 or higher to pass. Because the scale adjusts for the difficulty of each exam form, there is no fixed number of questions you need right. Our practice exams use 70% correct (70 of 100) as a benchmark. Aim higher than that before your test day.
Where do I take it, and what if I fail?
You can take it at your school, at a PSI testing center or through live remote proctoring. If you don't pass, you can retake it after 30 days, for up to three attempts. After a third failed attempt you must wait one year, and you pay the full exam fee for each attempt. Check the NHA Candidate Handbook for current fees and rules.
How do I keep my certification?
CCMA certification lasts two years. To renew, you complete 10 continuing education credits and pay the renewal fee before it expires.
Is this the official exam?
No. This is practice material to help you prepare. The CCMA exam is given by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). This site is not affiliated with NHA.
